The Texas Senate has recently passed a bipartisan property tax relief bill co-authored by Alice’s State Senator, Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa.
The bill, known as Senate Bill 4, or SB 4 was co-authored by Senators Hinojosa and Bettencourt, a Republican from Houston. It aims to provide property tax relief to millions of Texans who find it increasingly difficult stay on top of the rising costs.
“I was honored to joint-author these important bills and appreciate Senator Bettencourt’s efforts and Lt. Governor Patrick’s leadership in raising the homestead exemption to $140,000. Despite the significant property tax relief we have provided in the past two sessions, rising property taxes remain a top concern for many Texans,” the Senator said in a statement following the bill’s passage.
“These bills, if passed by the Texas House and approved by voters, will continue to deliver much-needed tax relief and allow homeowners to keep more money in their pockets,” Senator Hinojosa concluded.
SB4 will not only increase the homestead exemption to $140,000, but it will also provide funding for school districts that have funding shortfalls as a result of this relief. That means property owners would get some relief and local school districts won’t lose funding and cut essential services.
It is now up to the Texas House of Representatives to pass the bill and send it to Governor Abbott’s desk for approval.
