South Texas Braces for Freezing Temperatures and Potential Snow

Winter temperatures are returning to South Texas once again as the region prepares for icy conditions and the potential for snow. The cold front is expected to reach Alice on Sunday, when temperatures will drop to a low of 34°F.

As of the writing of this article, Alice has a 50% chance of precipitation on Monday, which is expected to have a low of 31°F. Tuesday is when it is widely expected to have the greatest chance for snow in the region. There’s a 70% chance of snow with a low of 27°F, far below the freezing point.

South Texas doesn’t get much snow, or really ice for that matter, so these conditions are typically going to affect day-to-day operations for most people. For safety tips and best practices checkout our prior article from a few weeks ago when the region had its previous cold front.

Alice ISD says they are monitoring conditions before making a decision about whether or not they will have a delayed start or any cancellations. Coastal Bend College has also released a statement indicating they may cancel classes and operations next week.

The community is coming together to prepare for this winter storm in more ways than one. Jim Wells County Precinct 4 Commissioner Wicho Gonzalez donated 21 bags of dog food and some blankets to the Alice animal shelter. These supplies will ensure that our local furry friends will stay well-fed and warm during the brutal weather.

Residents who may have to drive in freezing temperatures are urged to practice safe driving techniques. Try to fill up your entire tank before heading out, in the event that you become stranded. During inclement weather, it can be difficult for law enforcement or emergency services to reach you if there is an accident, so travel with essential items that can keep you warm and safe for a few hours.
