Alice was greeted by a light layer of snow overnight as temperatures dipped below 30 °F. This is the first time the city has experienced snow since Winter Storm Uri back in 2021.
The weather has prompted the temporary closure of several local school districts. Alice ISD says they will be closed all day Tuesday and Wednesday due to the inclement weather.
Many community members and officials worked together to open three warming centers across Jim Wells County last night. The community also came together to prepare in more ways than one: Jim Wells County Commissioner (Precinct 4) Wicho Gonzalez donated 21 bags of dog food and some blankets to the City of Alice Animal Services so they can adequately care for the pets during this weather.
For many parts of the country, a little bit of ice and snow is no big deal, but for Texas— especially South Texas, snow is so rare that it doesn’t make economic sense to buy equipment designed to clear roads for one day out of the year.
Despite the bitterly cold temperatures affecting much of the state, the Texas grid held up without any issues or calls for rationing— a stark contrast from the last time we had snow.
