The Alice Coyote Varsity Soccer Team participated in the Pleasanton Tournament this weekend where they went up against several other teams from South Texas.

The Coyotes started strong on the first game of the tournament. They played against the Beeville Trojans in what ended up being a close game. Ducky Godines, a senior and midfielder scored the first and only goal for the Coyotes. The match ended in a 1-1 tie, not quite the result they were hoping for, since this tournament is point-based.

The varsity team played against the Floresville Tigers in their second game of the tournament. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, they ended up losing this game without scoring a single point. It ended with a score of 0-5 for the Tigers.

Game three was a much better outcome for the Coyotes. They soundly defeated the Ingleside Mustangs in the third game of the tournament. Tike Aguilera is a senior and midfielder who scored one goal for the Coyotes. Kale Pruneda, a sophomore and midfielder scored another goal for the Alice Coyotes. Oscar Hernandez is a junior and midfielder/forward who scored the third goal for the Coyotes in game three. The final goal was scored by Ducky Godines who is a senior and midfielder.

In game three the Coyotes performed exceptionally well. Their communication, teamwork, and spirit carried them to victory. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, this victory was short-lived.

In the final match, the Alice Coyotes went up against San Antonio Christian School in their worst performance of the tournament. They finished the game with a final score of 0-8, earning no points towards their final placement. After all of their points were tallied, it became clear that the Coyotes did not earn enough to place in the top three of the tournament.

The Gazette spoke with Tike Aguilera who is one of the team captains for the Coyotes. Speaking about their performance, he quoted Conor McGregor who once said, “Your lack of commitment is an insult to those who believe in you.” Tike says, “[that] is something my parents have quoted to me many times. I stand by it. My team will continue to improve & take responsibility for any mistakes along the way.”

Although the Coyotes did not do as well as they had expected, this tournament gave them an opportunity to learn and grow from their mistakes. Win or lose, Coyote Country is always proud of our teams. The Coyotes will now have a change to evaluate their performance and make changes for their next district game.
