The Alice High School Mariachi Band competed this weekend in the UIL Coastal Bend Mariachi Contest at Robstown High School, where the Coyotes advanced to state after a beautiful performance.

The Alice ISD band department is led this year by Fine Arts Director Emerico Perez, who has decades of experience in the music education field.

When bands compete in UIL competitions they are graded by judges on a scale of 1-5. The bands with the best scores at the end of the competition will then advance to the next round, in this case: state. The Alice Mariachi Band received all ones from the judges, which is an impressive feat for these students.

The students who participate in these competitions spend weeks perfecting their tone, rhythm, and technique, all while appreciating the rich history of mariachi bands and ranchera music. Texas mariachi bands keep this vibrant tradition alive even in the modern era.

The UIL State Mariachi competition will take place on February 17, at Seguin High School. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and support the Coyotes.
