The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging Americans to wear their seatbelts, especially during the busy holiday travel season.

Wearing a seatbelt saved the life of a Jim Wells County woman involved in a crash early Monday morning. Jim Wells County Constable Pct. 5 Gerald Arismendez responded to what he calls “a single vehicle rollover” near the intersection of N. FM738 and CR306 around 2:40 am, according to a post he made on Facebook.

Constable Arismendez said the young woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was transported to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital in Alice to treat her non-life threatening injuries.

According to a study conducted by the NHTSA, between 1960 and 2012, seat belts saved 329,715 lives. Which the NHTSA says was “[more] than all other vehicle technologies combined, including air bags, energy-absorbing steering assemblies, and electronic stability control.”

The NHTSA also says that the simple act of putting on a seatbelt reduces the risk of death by half. Give your friends and family the best gift you can this holiday season, by taking the extra 5 seconds to put your seatbelt on and arrive safely.
