Alice HS Swim Relay Team Makes Waves, Qualifies for State

The Alice HS Swim Team’s 200 freestyle relay team placed second at regionals this weekend and will be advancing to the state competition in Austin in two weeks.

This relay team is comprised of four Alice HS students. Wesley McIntyre, Jojo Salinas, Jason Molina, Ayden Galvan competed against several other schools for their event and ultimately finished in second place with a time of 1:31, a personal record for the team.

AHS Swim Coach Savannah Albiar spoke with the Gazette following the news of their advancement. “The feeling is indescribable! They have all worked so hard for so long and deserve to advance! We as coaches, and parents are so proud of them!”

Coach Albiar also praised all of the boys for dropping time off of their last races, “Actually all 3 boys relays dropped time including Nicholas Deleon, they understood what was needed to be done to advance!” “They have been manifesting 3 22’s and a 23 for a while now,” she said.

Coach Albiar wrapped up our conversation with a thank you message for everyone who contributed to these boys’ success, “It really takes a village to get them where they are at and we appreciate everyone who has helped along the way,” she concluded.

Jojo Salinas is one of the participants of the relay team that advanced to state. We spoke with him about their second place finish and upcoming competition. “It feels great we proved a lot of people wrong that said we couldn’t compete in 5a,” he told the Gazette. “Now we just have to keep on working hard to finish the year on a good note to set high expectations for next year,” he says.

The Gazette will keep the community informed about this team’s performance at state in two weeks.
