GREGORY PORTLAND, Texas — The Alice High School band, led by Head Band Director Emerico Perez, had their first marching band competition yesterday at Gregory Portland High School where they won — and won big.

The Alice High School band has been practicing every day since July. While many students were enjoying the rest of their summer break, band members were arriving to the high school in the early morning hours to prepare for the competition season. These students braved high temperatures and sunny South Texas weather during every practice for months on end.

At yesterday’s competition, the Alice band performed their marching arrangement, titled “Transcendent Harmony,” under a hot Texas sun and still, they blew the judges away. The band placed first in the Colorguard and Drum Major categories. While impressive on their own, the band also received the first place award for the entire 5A division.

The Alice High School band will have two more competitions being held next Saturday, with a third UIL competition being held two weeks from now. If the band places well at UIL, they will have an opportunity to compete at the UIL Area competition and depending on those results, the Alice band could advance to state where they will compete against the best bands from across the Lone Star State.
