Alice Black History Delegation to Host Community Event Celebrating Heritage

The Alice Black History Delegation will be celebrating Black History Month at Coastal Bend College on February 8 at 1:00 pm. The theme of this year’s celebration will be African Americans and Labor.

Denina Nash Griffin will be the guest speaker at this year’s celebration. The address for the location of the event is 704 Coyote Trail, Alice, Texas 78332. There will be free food for all who attend and take advantage of this educational and cultural opportunity.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend this celebration of Black history, which is an inseparable part of American history, especially in the South.

The theme of African Americans and Labor is unique in the sense that the labor movement is often not associated with civil rights or African Americans. However, African Americans were an integral part of the labor movement in the United States.

Southern workers were often energized by Black labor activists, as they were some of the loudest pro-labor voices in the region. The civil rights movement is intrinsically tied to the labor movement. In fact, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at a pro-labor event organized by the Memphis sanitation workers. They advocated for fair wages and an end to workplace discrimination.

Special thanks to Linda Nash for submitting a tip to the Gazette about this event.
